Creative Hair Craft?

During a recent trip to Austin, Texas, we took a tour of the state capital and visitor's center. I was walking along enjoying the workmanship of the vintage hand stitched clothing, beautifully made quilts and then I got to THIS (click on the picture to get a closer look):

The placard reads: "In the 1880's, women often used their hair as a medium for making jewelry as well as home decorations. These items served as mementos of family and friends."
Now, I'll admit that the details of this piece are amazing and I have been known to recycle just about anything for a craft project... but HAIR???!
I'd love to hear if anyone reading this has made something out of human hair... anyone?
By the way, as a knitter and a shedding pet owner, I have seriously considered taking up spinning to utilize all the fur that floats around the hardwood floors of our house. I'm not sure how well dog and cat fur spin into yarn... but it's been a thought I've had. :)
Have a great weekend! Do something creative today!

Wow, that is amazing Brenda.

I've neaver heard of making things out of human hair.

But, once I did see a book about knitting with dog hair. But I think I'd rather go to Walmart and buy yarn.

You inspired me to get off the computer and unpack my stamp room a bit more.

Ok, well I am a little grosed out by this. It's pretty but....I think I am with the Rainy I would rather head over to walmart If I am in need of any yarn. :)

Yeah, this grossed me out too... that's why I'm sharing it with y'all! :)

Thanks for the link to that book, Rainy! Interesting... but I think it made me realize that I really don't want to make a sweater out of my pets' fur... looking at the back cover of that book (with the author in a furry vest and her daughter in a full-out furry sweater) it almost made me sneeze! If my pets shed, I can only imagine how much a sweater made with their fur would shed!

Can you imagine... going to a friend's house who happens to be allergic??? Okay, that reminds me, I better go vacuum! :)

Ya I've made something with hair...a clog for my drain. I don't why this disturbs me but, man, it does. I have a friend that had an Aussie Shepherd and she made a sweater from the dog's hair. It was beautiful. She was a blond dog and has since died so the sweater means a lot to her. Why does THIS not gross me out? I haven't a clue. LOL!
